U.S.-Africa Business Summit 2024: Plenary: Navigating Africa’s Energy Future

The high-level plenary on “Navigating Africa’s Energy Future,” held during the U.S.-Africa Business Summit organized by the Corporate Council on Africa in Dallas, Texas, gathered key leaders to discuss the continent’s energy landscape. Moderated by Nneka Chime, Partner at Cross Boundary, the session featured insights from Clay Neff, President of Chevron International Exploration and Production; Alan Ebobise, CEO of Africa 50; Chief Adebayo Adelebu, Honorable Minister of Power of Nigeria; João Lourenço, President of Angola; and Mohamed Ould Bilal, Prime Minister of Mauritania. The discussion focused on strategies to enhance Africa’s energy access, sustainability, and economic growth. Clay Neff emphasized Chevron’s commitment to Africa’s energy sector through sustainable practices and renewable energy investments. He discussed ongoing projects and future plans aimed at increasing energy production while minimizing environmental impact. Alan Ebobisse highlighted the crucial role of infrastructure investment in accelerating energy development, showcasing Africa 50’s initiatives to mobilize private and public sector funds for large-scale energy projects. Chief Adebayo Adelebu outlined Nigeria’s strategy to enhance its power sector, emphasizing policy reforms, investment in renewable energy, and improving grid reliability. He stressed the importance of regional cooperation and technology transfer. President João Lourenço of Angola discussed efforts to diversify energy sources, focusing on hydroelectric and solar energy investments, and underscored the significance of political stability and regulatory frameworks in attracting foreign investments. Prime Minister Mohamed Ould Bilal of Mauritania shared his country’s approach to achieving energy independence through renewable energy projects and regional partnerships, while balancing economic development with environmental sustainability. The plenary concluded with a consensus on the need for cohesive policies, increased investment, and regional collaboration to shape Africa’s sustainable and prosperous energy future. Leaders called for continued dialogue and action to ensure that the continent’s energy sector can meet the demands of its growing population and drive economic development.
