Scaling Africa’s Health Markets: AMA, Rwanda, and Private Sector Opportunity

CCA’s virtual session, “Scaling Africa’s Health Markets: AMA, Rwanda, and Private Sector Opportunity,” held as part of the Regulatory Harmonization Series under the U.S.-Africa Health Security and Resilience Initiative, brought together private sector leaders, regulators, policymakers, and other stakeholders for a timely discussion on regulatory and market developments shaping Africa’s growing health sector.
The session featured insights from Meisha Sampson, Director of the U.S. FDA’s African Medicines Agency Liaison Office; Hussein Sall, Commercial Advisor and Specialist at the U.S. Embassy in Kigali; and Meenakshi Chivukula, Political Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Kigali. Speakers provided updates on the operationalization of the African Medicines Agency, including its role in strengthening regulatory coordination, supporting greater alignment across national regulatory systems, and advancing a more predictable environment for health sector investment and innovation.
The discussion also highlighted Rwanda as an important case study for health market development, with speakers outlining the country’s broader investment climate, health sector priorities, and opportunities for private sector engagement. Participants gained practical insight into how regulatory harmonization, improved policy coordination, and stronger public-private collaboration can help expand access to quality health products and services while supporting sustainable commercial growth across the continent.
Overall, the session underscored the importance of continued dialogue between regulators, governments, industry, and development partners as Africa’s health markets evolve. It also reinforced HSRI’s role as a platform for sharing timely information, identifying areas for collaboration, and helping private sector stakeholders better understand emerging opportunities linked to regulatory reform and health systems strengthening.
